Bangkok 2009 Day 2

If you’ve missed the first day, start with me from the beginning.

Packaged together with our 4 night stay at the hotel is the daily serving of “American” breakfast. I don’t think it looks anything American at all. But that was how we started day 2 of our trip. This post is jam packed with photos so get ready for a bandwidth intensive session.

First stop of the day was Chatuchak Market! Apparently Chatuchak Market is the biggest market in Bangkok and it’s only open on weekends. They sell almost everything, from clothes to live chicken. Due to time constraints we only covered about half of the clothing section and we were there for a good 5 hours. It’s that big!

1 Pair of Converse Shoe – SGD$31.70
Lunch (Pork mince, Chicken mince, Prawn cake, Coconut Juice) - SGD$4.20

Everything you can get at Chatuchak Market is cut-priced. Don’t be afraid to bargain, but of course, do it politely. It’s like a game of poker. Don’t show your emotions too soon, and keep that wallet in your pocket until you’ve made the final offer. Our best bargain was reduced by 60% off the original price! Start with your lowest offer then slowly work it up to meet the seller’s. It’s like Pricing 101 at university again. Lunch was also incredibly cheap! We had 6 coconuts amongst ourselves, and even had a manequin carry the loot.

We didn’t take a lot of pictures at Chatuchak Market because almost every other shop within the same section looks similar to me. I’d go, “hey, weren’t we here before? did we go back the wrong way?” But that’s how everything is within those lanes; they all look the same to me. Just a warning, it’s really really hot in there. So be prepared to fight for oxygen and your life. Thankfully that day was pretty cloudy so we were all spared from the heat. Then it started raining and things got slightly dirtier so we decided to head back to the hotel.

The taxis outside Chatuchak Market were either too smart or too stubborn. Most of them insisted on prefixed pricing or claimed that they didn’t know how to get to our hotel. It got pretty frustrating especially when you’re in the rain trying to hail a cab. Nevertheless, we got one. For some reason, he made a right turn at the street just before our hotel which got all of us thinking. And he alighted us at the main road opposite our hotel, which is a lot of trouble trying to jay-walk across. Good thing was, we were met with a very welcoming massage parlour on the overhead bridge that we took en route home. And guess what, we spent the next 1 hour there. For me, it was probably the most unforgettable 60 minutes.

THAI MASSAGE!

Thai Massage 1 hour at MaiThai Massage Parlour – SGD$7.50

Long story short, I got served by a transvestite. It was absolutely strange because all my other groupies had masseuse of the same gender except for me. And it could mean 2 things, either I was really lucky or she’s not a she. Discrimination aside, my masseuse actually did a really good job (except for the times where.. okay maybe it’s too much information). But for the first 20 minutes, we all couldn’t stop laughing because Crystal couldn’t keep her laughter to herself and laughters are usually very contagious especially when you’re in a situation like this. Anyway, no more pictures from this part of the trip. It’s slightly traumatic for me. And all the other group mates are going around Singapore telling their friends about what has happened. They claimed to have lived to tell the tale, when in fact I should be the one saying that!

Dinner was at another local food stall. We had Thai Style Beef Noodles. It’s slightly sweeter than your usual Singaporean counterpart and they give a whole lot more ingredients. And it’s only 40 Baht! We also had 2 serves each of Thai Milk Tea and Thai Lime Tea. You have to try those things! It’s nothing like you’ve had. I think it has something to do with the ice and the tea.

After which I had the best ride of my life, in a Tuk Tuk.

The most happening place to be at in Bangkok has to be Khao San Road. If I had to describe it, it’s like Holland Village or Serangoon Gardens with a lot of westerners. There are pubs and the locals are at their friendliest. Great place to be at.

Andrew and I also managed to strike off something in our “Must do at least once in life” list: performing in a live pub. I only played the guitar. It wasn’t fantastic. But it was fun. I’ll leave that for Andrew to tell you. Haha.
