Resources for Growth

This post is part 7 of 17 from the series "Emails to Joel"

Hello sir!

I just got back from Kukup. I think you should know where that is since you’re a Malaysian yourself. haha. I almost caught a huge fish (they said that it could have been a barracuda) but the string snapped!

Anyway, the trip was good. The sharing during our retreat came from Matthew 6, the part about where your treasure is and seeking God’s Kingdom first. And I was reminded to chase after God and growing in Christ, instead of chasing other treasures.

Speaking of growing in Christ, I want to introduce you to several resources that have been very helpful to me in the past few years, and I think they will help you too.

Tools

Blogs and Sites

Videos (I merely searched YouTube for most of them)

The list is just a handful of stuff, you would probably start finding and adding to this list for your own good. And above all, the Bible is still always the best reference.

Like Dong always say, “Your spiritual growth is your responsibility”.

Keep Growing,
Willywei

KISS

This post is part 6 of 17 from the series "Emails to Joel"

Dear Joel,

You should have heard the acronym “KISS” before. It has many versions, but I prefer the “Keep It Short and Simple” one.

  1. In the age where people browse more than they read (it’s the Internet’s fault), mankind’s attention span has also diminished. Keep your talk to less than 30 minutes.
  2. Give people 1,2,3 or 4 points to take home. 4 is maximum. That is my personal rule. Unless you know that people are taking notes, then you may add more.
  3. To make people remember the key points of your message, repeat. To make people remember the key points of your message, repeat.
  4. Don’t use bombastic words. No one is going to understand what you say. Don’t use jargon where there are newcomers, explain it in layman terms.

Short and sweet,
Willywei

HOW TO: Be Resourceful

This post is part 5 of 17 from the series "Emails to Joel"

Hey Joel!

Over the years I’ve unintentionally developed a reputation of being very resourceful even when I’m unable to help. It’s good and bad. But all in all, it helps to be resourceful.

The good thing is, I know where to get the best deals and how to get them. I know which place to get party supplies on a public holiday or who has sound equipment I could readily borrow. And that’s great especially when you’re in charge and you suddenly slip up.

So to become resourceful yourself, you need to start becoming more observant. Start observing where things are in the super market. Start making a mental record of who has what thing(s) that can be borrowed. Start knowing which shops are opened on which days. And even better, if you can’t find something, know who you can ask. When all else fails, Google will be your best friend.

Knowing how to find something and getting it is a great life skill Joel. Nobody is going to teach you that in University. And now I’m telling you that such skills exist and they are going to make your value climb.

In your ministry, it pays to be extremely resourceful. You don’t want to go “uhm… sorry I don’t know” when your people come asking you how to get certain things done. The least you could say to them is, “I’m not sure, but why don’t you try asking [so and so]. I’m sure he’ll be able to help you with that.”

Go get it mate!
